EDITORIAL – Cops who can’t shoot straight

copsNearly 90 percent of the 125,000 members of the Philippine National Police failed a firearms proficiency test, according to the National Police Commission. That story would be laughable if it didn’t have dire consequences for law enforcement.

Cops who can’t shoot straight lose out to crooks who can. Cops who can’t shoot straight end up shooting dead both hostage taker and the hostage. Cops who can’t hit their targets end up hitting innocent civilians instead, as in the case of the policemen who shot and killed an overseas Filipino worker on vacation in Manila together with his daughter. Father and daughter had the misfortune of getting in the way of a running gun battle between cops and a gang of suspected criminals in southern Metro Manila. Those cops, who were legitimately pursuing suspected crooks, would have been spared from an ongoing investigation and their possible expulsion from the police force if they could use their firearms properly.

Only In The Philippines

Yeah it is just really in the Philippines, where holidays are moved, instead of this coming April 9, which Philippines celebrates; “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) a holiday which we commemorates the fall of Bataan during World War II. Although President Gloria Macpagal-Arroyo moved it to April 6 to create a long weekend.

And again more holidays to come for the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines – President Arroyo has declared Nov. 27 and 28 as non-working holidays in line with the celebration of the Eid’l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), the culmination of Harirya Hajj or the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Mrs. Arroyo, on the eve of her 62nd birthday celebration, made the declaration after consultation with Saudi Arabian ambassador Mohammad Ameen Wali.

Eid’l Adha is the second major Islamic festival celebrated by 10 million Filipino Muslims in the country.

The first Muslim festival, Eid’l Fitr or the “Festival of Breaking Fast”, is celebrated two months earlier.

There were other holidays that were also moved in the past year. Is this right for a country? Maybe even Christmas Day and New Years Day will also be moved in the coming years who knows. Maybe there will also be an Arroyo Day before the presidents term will be over.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – P2P Leaked

wolverineOne of the most awaited movies this year, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has been seen leaked on the most popular (illegal) p2p network. The movie was supposed to be on theaters in May 1 this year. But pirates from an unknown source, got a workprint on the movie. Workprint which means the movie is incomplete and is still being furnished and polished before it has to be released. The leaked movie, will definitely not be the one that will be shown on theaters, but most of its parts will be there.

Somehow a member or members of the group (the X-Men Origins Wolverine staff) who had access to the records are the suspects on this movie leakage. This is just to see that pirates not only come from the outside of the industries, but inside as well. I don’t know what 20th Century Fox has to say about this, but i know that i really ruined their day bigtime. The company is tracking down and removing the leaked content from the internet.

This has really been an April Fools Day true story of the year.

Happy April Fools Day

The origin of April Fools’ Day is obscure. One likely theory is that the modern holiday was first celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar; the term referred to someone still adhering to the Julian Calendar which it replaced. In many pre-Christian cultures May Day (May 1) was celebrated as the first day of summer, and signalled the start of the spring planting season. An April Fool was someone who did this prematurely. Another origin is that April 1 was counted the first day of the year in France. When King Charles IX changed that to January 1, some people stayed with April 1. Those who did were called “April Fools” and were taunted by their neighbors. In the eighteenth century the festival was often posited as going back to the times of Noah. An English newspaper article published on April 13th, 1789 said that the day had its origins when he sent the raven off too early, before the waters had receded. He did this on the first day of the Hebrew month that corresponds with April. A possible reference to April Fools’ Day can be seen in the Canterbury Tales (ca 1400) in the Nun’s Priest’s tale, a tale of two fools: Chanticleer and the fox, which took place on March 32nd.

Spy Network = Cyber Wars

hacks I have read some news today, and its all about hacking. There have been a lot of hacking incidents lately throughout the world and its getting bigger and bigger.

An electronic spy network has been set up in China and it was called GhostNet. It had infiltrated around 1300 computers in 100 countries. Most of the hacked computers were owners of ministries and embasies. The biggest hit was linked through the Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama.

Researchers also found that ministries of foreign affairs of Iran, Bangladesh, Latvia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Barbados and Bhutan appear to had been targeted. Hacked systems were also discovered in the embassies of countries including India, South Korea, Indonesia, Romania, Cyprus, Thailand, Germany and Pakistan.

Analysts say the attacks are in effect industrial espionage, with hackers showing an interest in the activities of lawmakers and major companies.

They say they believe the system, which they called GhostNet, was focused on governments in Asia. By installing malware on compromised computers, hackers were able to take control of them to send and receive classified data.

There is no conclusive evidence China’s government was behind it, researchers say. Beijing also denied involvement.

There were reports of peanut butter having salmonella before. I watched them on the television, I heard them on the radio, I even heard them from grocery stores and even inside our home. It wasn’t a big deal for me though I am not a fan of peanut butters. It just struck me to post this article due to, one of our own products made here from the Philippines contained salmonella. Becareful on what you eat.
